| The Board of Directors
of the Taos Coalition to End Homelessness Incorporated, a 501(c)3
non-profit corporation, has announced plans to acquire the Budget
Host Inn in Taos, New Mexico. It is the intention of the board to
convert the former motel into a facility providing transitional
and emergency housing for low income, area residents. The Taos
Transitional Living Center will be the first of its kind in Taos
County.
The Living Center will be a 22 unit
facility providing eighteen furnished efficiency units and four,
two-room furnished apartments for both low income transitional
housing and occasional emergency housing. Transitional housing
will be offered for lease for six to eight months to individuals
and families requiring short-term domicile while they make a
transition to permanent housing. Utilities (water,
electricity, and heat) will be included in the lease price.
Trained staff members of the Taos
Transitional Living Center will provide full case management
services for residents in order to provide assistance in making
the transition from transitional living to permanent housing.
Services will include:
- Employment assistance
- Health maintenance
- Veteran's services
- Permanent housing placement
services
- Substance abuse prevention
- Services for resident children,
including coordination with area schools to insure the
continuity of education and tutoring to help them achieve and
maintain age level performance
- Life skills training for
residents, including computer literacy, household budgeting
and finance, parenting, nutrition and self care, interviewing
and resume preparation
- Fully integrated coordination
with area social services
Homeward Angels 400
We are turning to our neighbors for help. The purchase
price of the Budget Host Inn is $800,000. The Board of
Directors expects to receive $200,000 in grants from private
foundations toward the purchase price.
We are asking you to join the
Committee of 400 -- four hundred area individuals, families, and
businesses, our "Homeward Angels", who will contribute
$1000 towards the purchase price. Thanks to the generosity
of Board members and other donors, we have received pledges of
$200,000 in matching funds, so your gift of $1000 will direct
$1500 to the project. Your gift may be a lump sum or a
pledge payable in installments over the period of one year.
To make a pledge or for more
information, please contact Dr. Douglas Scott at (575) 770 - 2324
The Coalition Board of Directors thanks you very much.
